Most papers published on the modeling of packed batch distillation columns have only presented theoretical predictions and there is still a lack of experimental results for verification. A laboratory column packed with #15 Intalox metal tower packing was designed for this purpose. A binary and a ternary mixtures were used. A program was developed to automate the experimental operation and a PI overhead composition controller was designed Experiments were carried out for testing the effect of reboiler holdup, charge mixture initial compositions, reflux ratio and for designing the controller for the column and for testing how two different operation modes, constant reflux and constant overhead composition, improve the separation of a given mixture. It is believed that obtained experimental data will make a contribution in modeling studies. Copyright (C) 1998 IFAC.
