Hip disartculation is an amputation through hip joint capsule, removing the entire lower extremity with closure of the remaining musculature over the exposed acetabulum. Hip disarticulation is considered a poor oncological operative prosedure (distal femoral sarcomas). Other indications for hip disarticulation are large daiphyseal tumors that do not extend above the lesser trochanteric area. Vascular disease and congenital abnormalities are also amongst the less common indications. With this paper we try to outline the indications for hip disarticulation and contemporary methods of hip disarticulation.
