Abstract

In this study, the optimum lateral lengths of drip irrigation pipes in two different diameters and with the same type of emitter were examined. Two different diameters (OD: 14.8 mm, ID: 13.0 mm and OD: 15.8 mm, ID: 14.0 mm) having the same in-line type emitter with 20, 25, 33, 40, 50, 60 and 75 cm emitter spacing were used. The technical properties of the emitter were determined. And the frictional losses in these laterals were calculated from measured head loss and flow rate. The experimental pressure-flow rate and frictional loss equations were used to calculate the optimum lateral lengths at 1.0 and 1.5 bar operating pressures and various slopes by using a computer program. The variations of optimum lateral lengths with two different diameter pipes under various operating conditions were determined as a percentage. From the study, it was concluded that the optimum lengths of small diameter laterals were shorter than the other laterals ranging between 3.07 % and 9.92 %.
