Abstract

Humorous gestures in the theatric genres like shadow theatre Karagoz, middle play Orta Oyunu, dramatic village plays and the traditional storyteller Meddah, are mostly depend on "verbal humor" and "gesture humor". Most of the studies on the humorous elements in the Turkish folk theatre focus on to the verbal humor in the narrations. However, gesture humor is as important as the verbal humor in determining the humorous structure in Turkish folk theatre and in defining how laughter occurs. Because gesture humor mostly has the function of supporting the verbal humor, however; in some cases it just forms the main structure of creating the laughter.
