Abstract

This paper aims to investigate the influence of sewing on the strength reduction of sewing threads. For this purpose, four commercial sewing thread types with different sizes were selected for the present study. The samples were sewn with specific sewing parameters. The tensile strength of the threads taken from the parent thread and the sewn samples was measured to evaluate the strength reduction of the threads. Then the percentage decrease in tensile strength was calculated. It was observed that the breaking strength of each parent thread was significantly greater than its corresponding sewn thread strength. Moreover, the samples sewn with core-spun threads showed lower strength loss while the samples sewn with cotton threads showed the highest loss.
