Essential oils; they are volatile, strongly
odorous, water-vaporous, oily mixtures which are obtained from plants or plant
drugs by liquid methods at room temperature. Essential oils are used by the
fragrance and taste industries in the preparation of perfume, food additives,
aroma therapy, cleaning products, cosmetics and medicines, as a source of aroma
chemicals, or as the starting material for synthesis of natural and
semi-synthetic useful aroma chemicals. IN Turkey which has a rich variety of
medicinal plant species and ecologically suitable for the agriculture of these
plants, will have an important market potential in the world in terms of production
and trade of essential oils by increasing production possibilities. World
essential oil imports reached 5.531 billion USD in 2018, and USA, France,
India, Germany and the UK having the largest market share in exports. While the
world's essential oil exports were 4.884 billion USD, while India, USA and
France ranked first in exports. Turkey's essential oil imports increased from
176% to 12.155 thousand USD has increased to 33.546 thousand USD in the last
decade (2010-2018). Exports of essential
oil increased by 172% from 17.492 thousand USD to 47.481 thousand USD. The main
countries exporting essential oil are India, USA and France. Rose oil in export
of essential oils is in the first place. The rose oil obtained from species of Rosa
damascena Mill. is known as "Turkish rose oil" in the world
market. In 2018, rose oil exports amounted to 14.6 million USD. Approximately
60% of essential oil of rose was exported to France. The main export countries
are France, England and USA.
